WASHINGTON COUNTY, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — Washington County sends back more than $490,000 in Emergency Rental Assistance 1 funds because it didn’t use the money in time.
ERA1 funds came from the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021. The deadline to use the money was September 30, 2022. That deadline was during County Judge Joseph Wood’s administration, but a current county spokesperson says it spent about $9.7 million in ERA1 money.
They say the county is waiting to hear back from the federal government about how to return the funds.
The United States Treasury Department says that money could have been used to help people pay rent or even utility bills.
