GULFPORT, Miss. (WJTV) – Mississippi Aquarium will officially launch a capital campaign to raise the remaining $3 million dollars needed to build a permanent on-campus penguin exhibit.
The Penguin House Party is one of a few special events this year supporting the efforts of moving their small colony of endangered African Penguins from their current home at an off-campus facility to an on-campus habitat built specifically for them. Officials said this will provide an opportunity for more visitors to view these magnificent creatures and learn about Mississippi Aquarium’s conservation efforts for their species.
African Penguins are one of the most endangered penguin species and are in urgent need of conservation intervention. The small colony of African Penguins at Mississippi Aquarium have an important job to act as ambassadors for their species. Officials said caring for the species allows aquarium staff to educate guests and spread their conservation message.
This habitat has been designed to mirror the African Penguins coastal home, with nesting areas that the staff hopes will result in baby penguins.
The Penguin House Party presented by Kicker 108 will be held on Friday, May 3 from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at the Mississippi Aquarium campus. The event will feature live music from New Orleans party band, Sugar Shaker and will include delicious coastal cuisine generously donated by downtown Gulfport eateries. Beer and wine will also be complimentary.
Attendees are encouraged to wear their best black and white outfit and get ready for exclusive encounters with the penguin colony. The Penguin House Party is open to those 21 years of age and older. Tickets are $55 per person and include food, beer and wine.
