WWU receives millions in funds for new STEM labs

BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Western Washington University (WWU) is getting a boost to its newest STEM-based facility.

The school announced Thursday that it will receive nearly $2.5 million in federal funding for its upcoming electrical engineering and computer science building.

The funding – secured by U.S. Senators Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell – will help build research and instructional labs within the facility. Those labs will include subjects such as robotics and autonomous transportation. The funds will also support the school’s energy course labs with key equipment for research like wind turbine generators and smart building technologies.

The facility, named Kaiser Borsari Hall, is currently under construction on the south end of Western’s campus.

When complete, WWU said it will be Washington’s first publicly funded zero-energy academic building on a university campus. Construction is expected to finish in early 2025.
