CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WHSV) – Three childhood development programs in West Virginia will receive just over $16 million in combined federal funding awards, U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin (I-W.Va.) announced Tuesday.
The three programs service various regions of West Virginia. Their individual awards from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) are as follows, according to Manchin’s website:
- $8,823,443 – North-Central West Virginia Community Action Association
- $5,868,430 – Eastern Panhandle Instructional Cooperative
- $1,360,810 – Greenbrier County Board of Education
West Virginia’s Head Start initiative, which includes these three programs, provides services that support early learning and development, family well-being and more for children from birth to age 5.
Manchin is a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, which allocates federal funds to various government agencies and programs each year.
“Every child in West Virginia deserves access to a quality education, no matter their background or where they live in our great state,” Manchin said in a press release. “I’m pleased that HHS is investing more than $16 million to support these critical Head Start programs, which will provide the children they serve with the skills and foundation they need for a brighter future. As a long-time supporter of Head Start programs … I will continue advocating for funding to support educational opportunities for children across the Mountain State.”
