SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – Springfield City Council will consider Monday night whether or not to accept around $400,000 in ARPA funding to cover stormwater drain and sidewalk improvements in two Springfield neighborhoods.
The areas affected would be Nichols Street from Dickerson to Hutchinson Avenues and Clifton Avenue from Kearney to High Streets.
“We are seeking city council approval to enter in agreements with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources for ARPA funding for two projects, both of which will provide storm water improvements and also provide sidewalks as well,” said Scott Bachman, Transportation planner for the city.
The stormwater improvements would upgrade the areas to be consistent with city standards. Neighbors say they don’t see a lot of flooding in those areas, but the city says that doesn’t mean they don’t need upgraded.
“Certainly just be able to tie in and have have consistency with respect to the stormwater flow and also provide safety and accessibility through the provision of sidewalks where they currently don’t exist,” said Bachman.
The two neighborhoods were decided on based on their need for both upgrades.
“We looked for for areas that that that needed stormwater improvement. Both of these areas have open ditches with culvert pipes under driveways and could be better managed through curb and gutter, stormwater inlets, and stormwater pipe to handle the stormwater runoff. It also would allow us to construct sidewalks to replace gaps in areas where there were sidewalks don’t exist currently,” said Bachman.
Bachman says the project will cost just over $466,000. The city is currently in the engineering phase but will take bids starting in the fall with plans to have construction start next year.
The city council meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Regional Police and Fire Training Center on West Battlefield.
