Bulgarians switch to the euro

Deputies of the Bulgarian Parliament adopted the Draft Law on the transition to the euro as the national currency.

“The draft regulates the principles, framework and procedures for putting the euro into circulation in Bulgaria, determines the regulations for the transition and introduces a transition period that will allow citizens time to adjust to the new currency,” according to local media.

The date of the release of the euro into circulation in Bulgaria is still unknown, since it has to be determined by the European Council, reports Nezavisne novine.

Bulgarian media point out that, after the entry into force of the law, the regime of using two currencies, the Bulgarian lev and the euro, will remain in Bulgaria for a month. At the end of the transition period, the Bulgarian lev should be completely phased out.

The prices of goods and services will be indicated in two currencies per year.

At the beginning of June, the Bulgarian media, citing sources in Brussels, reported that Bulgaria did not meet all the necessary criteria for the transition to the euro and that it will not enter the eurozone until January 1, which is at least a year longer than planned.
