Upper Adams School District Loses Million Dollar Endowment Over Legal Partnership Decision

The Upper Adams School District faces a significant financial setback as a potential donor withdraws a planned endowment worth at least one million dollars following the school board’s decision to collaborate with the Independence Law Center (ILC), Superintendent Dr. Wesley Doll announced.

The withdrawn support comes in response to concerns over the ILC’s policies and their alignment with the educational values the donor intended to support. “The recent decision by the school board to partner with the ILC had an impact that I had not anticipated,” Dr. Doll expressed in a statement. He noted that the donor, who has been associated with the district for many years, felt that the ILC’s approach might not serve the best interests of the students and the community.

This decision by the donor, who intended to include the endowment in their will, reflects deep-seated concerns about the long-term impact of the school board’s partnership on the quality and equity of education within the district. The endowment, which was to be used primarily for grants and scholarships, now leaves the district without significant future financial support.

During a school board meeting on Tuesday night, the withdrawal prompted discussions among members, with three of the nine who opposed the partnership with the ILC suggesting a potential reconsideration of the decision.

The superintendent remains hopeful about re-engaging with the donor to address their concerns and possibly restore their support. Meanwhile, the community reaction is mixed, with some residents appreciating the board’s steadfast adherence to their values despite the financial implications.

The situation underscores the challenges school districts face when balancing donor expectations with administrative decisions.
