GRUBBS, Ark. (KAIT) – The town of about 300 people faces major flooding issues year after year.
When it rains, it pours, especially for the city of Grubbs in Jackson County.
In February, a levee breach near the Cache River led Mayor Candace Miller to declare a state of emergency.
Eight months later, Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders approved over $32,000 of disaster relief funds for the city of Grubbs.
Miller said the city should receive the money in 10 to 15 days.
“This is a huge blessing because a little town like ours can’t afford a hit like that,” Miller said. “We’re just a hope and a prayer to get through every month.”
The city spent months asking the state for help.
In the meantime, loyal community members dedicated their time and money to get their hometown where it needed to be by donating equipment, filling sandbags, and more.
However, Miller claimed they needed nearly $95K to protect the city from flooding again.
“We could not afford this,” Miller said.
The city‘s main goal is to keep its citizens dry. City Council Member June Lloyd said they choose to be proactive with the relief funds.
“Put it toward paying things off so we avoid having difficulties,” Lloyd said.
Miller said the city plans to install floodgates to deter the rain and debris in the Cache River in a direction that does not put the city under water and impact residents.
