LINCOLN, Neb. (WOWT) – President Joe Biden has approved Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen’s request for disaster funds in the wake of the July 31 storms.
Federal funds are now available to state, tribal, and eligible local governments, and select nonprofits for emergency work and replacement of facilities damaged by the severe storms in Cass, Douglas, Lancaster, Sarpy, and Saunders Counties.
Gov. Jim Pillen asked the federal government for funding to assist in relief efforts from the severe storms that struck western Nebraska on July 31 and Aug. 1.
The storms brought with them straight-line winds, hail, and flooding rains that caused an estimated $34.6 million in damage and one of the largest outages in the history of the Omaha Public Power District, leaving 221,000 customers without power in the metro alone. Power restoration efforts continued for over a week after the storms hit.
Nebraska has already been granted a federal disaster declaration for storm damage on three separate occasions in less than six months: April 6-7, May 20-June 3, and the now-infamous Arbor Day tornado outbreak on April 26.
