Dollar General adds fresh produce to Apopka location

From Dollar General and Staff Reports

Small-box discount retailers, or dollar stores as they are commonly called, are a subject Apopkans seem to hate, the market seems to love, and customers seem to patronize.

Dollar Retail stores have had a checkered existence in Apopka. In 2021, the City Council passed Ordinance 2884, which does not allow a dollar store to open within two miles of an existing dollar store.

As of 2021, there were 12 dollar stores in Apopka and 16-20 in the immediate area.

Another complaint the City Council discussed was the quality of groceries offered by dollar stores. However, a local Dollar General is attempting to upgrade its selection.

The company released the following statement:

“Dollar General is excited to announce it recently remodeled its store at 3806 Ocoee Apopka Road in Apopka. In addition to the same categories, brands, and products customers trust Dollar General to carry, the store now provides customers with an assortment of fresh fruits and vegetables.

“At Dollar General, we strive to be a positive business partner and good community neighbor in Apopka,” said Matthew Simonsen, Dollar General’s senior vice president of real estate and store development. “Although we are not a grocery store, we believe the addition of produce in our Apopka store highlights our commitment to deliver a pleasant shopping experience that includes affordable prices on quality products in a convenient location.”

While DG is not a grocer, the Company cares about and is invested in the health of its hometowns. It currently offers fresh fruits and vegetables in more than 5,400 DG stores, giving the Company more individual points of produce distribution than any other U.S. mass retailer or grocer. Dollar General’s produce set offers the top 20 items typically sold in traditional grocery stores, which includes a curated assortment of lettuce, tomatoes, onions, apples, bananas, strawberries, potatoes, sweet potatoes, lemons, limes, salad mixes, and more.

DG stores are proud to provide customers with affordable and convenient access to household essentials, including components of a nutritious meal (canned and frozen vegetables, canned fruits, proteins, grains, dairy, and more), cleaning supplies, paper products, over-the-counter medicines, hygiene products, baby items and more through its mission of serving others.”
