LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – Lincoln Police arrested a woman for reportedly stealing over $130,000 in children’s benefits and using the funds to gamble.
According to LPD, police received information that the 41-year-old woman had stolen her children‘s benefits, which were received following their father’s death.
The three children were beneficiaries of their father‘s life insurance and retirement benefits. Since the beneficiaries were minors, the insurance company required the woman to be appointed as their court-appointed conservator.
The court ordered that each conservator account be restricted and that the woman was not authorized to make cash withdrawals without a court order.
On Aug. 14, the Lancaster County Probate Court requested an accounting of the children’s financial accounts, which was not provided by their conservator. Financial records found that the minors’ conservator accounts held less than $3.
Between December 23, 2023, and April 30, the woman transferred approximately $132,843.46 to her personal bank account from the children’s accounts, all of which were unauthorized by the Lancaster County Probate Court. Around $58,339.70 was spent at casinos.
The woman was arrested for unlawfully taking more than $5,000. Her next court date is scheduled for Oct. 29.
