Arrest made in shooting of clerk at Anderson Dollar General store, deputies say

RAY. THANK YOU. THE SEARCH IS STILL UNDERWAY IN ANDERSON COUNTY AFTER AN ARMED ROBBERY AT A DOLLAR GENERAL ON HIGHWAY 252 THIS MORNING. THE ANDERSON COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE HAS RELEASED SURVEILLANCE PHOTOS OF THE MAN THEY SAY SHOT A CASHIER. WE ARE ALSO LEARNING MORE ABOUT THE MOMENTS INSIDE THE STORE. OUR MAYA PAYTON IS LIVE WITH THE LATEST MAYA. NIGEL AND CAROL, TWO OFFICERS HAVE POPPED UP BACK ON SCENE, BUT THIS IS NOTHING COMPARED TO WHAT WE SAW EARLIER TODAY. NOW THE CRIME SCENE TAPE HAS BEEN REMOVED. THE SCENE IS MUCH QUIETER, BUT THE REALITY OF WHAT HAPPENED INSIDE OF THIS STORE IS STILL SETTLING IN. FOR THOSE WHO LIVE THROUGH IT. LET’S FIRST TAKE A LOOK AT THE SUSPECT. THE ANDERSON COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE RELEASED THESE SURVEILLANCE IMAGES OF THE SUSPECT, DESCRIBING HIM AS A WHITE MALE BETWEEN FIVE, TEN AND SIX FEET TALL, WEARING A DARK, LONG SLEEVE SHIRT, GRAY ATHLETIC PANTS, A DARK BEANIE, AND SUNGLASSES. THE ROBBERY HAPPENED JUST BEFORE 11 A.M., AND DEPUTIES SAY THE SUSPECT WALKED IN, PULLED A GUN AND FIRED, HITTING THE CASHIER IN THE SHOULDER BEFORE TAKING THE MONEY AND RUNNING AWAY. INSIDE THE STORE, ANOTHER WORKER DIDN’T HESITATE. THAT EMPLOYEES MOTHER DIDN’T WANT TO BE ON CAMERA, BUT SHE TELLS US HER DAUGHTER SAW EVERYTHING. SHE SAYS HER DAUGHTER RAN STRAIGHT TO THE VICTIM, PRESSING DOWN ON THE WOUND TRYING TO STOP THE BLEEDING. THE MOTHER SAYS HER DAUGHTER IS STILL PROCESSING WHAT HAPPENED, BUT DID WHAT SHE COULD IN THE MOMENT. An arrest has been made after a clerk was shot Wednesday morning at the Dollar General in Anderson, South Carolina. The sheriff’s office said the shooting happened at 10:45 a.m. at the store on Highway 252.Investigators say the suspect, now identified as 51-year-old Thomas “Britt” Alewine, pointed a weapon at the store clerk and demanded money. As the clerk was attempting to gather the cash, Alewine shot the clerk in the shoulder, deputies said. The victim was transported to AnMed Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Alewine is charged with armed robbery, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and attempted murder.
