Dollar General planning to close nearly 100 locations in early 2025, repurpose concept stores

Dollar General says it will close 96 stores in early 2025. The company will also close an additional 45 Popshelf stores following performance reviews conducted last year. Six Popshelf stores will be converted to traditional Dollar General stores as part of the moves.

Popshelf is a concept store owned by Dollar General that sells home decor, seasonal items and more. Dollar General operates approximately 20,000 locations in the U.S. The company did not provide a list of locations that are expected to close.

The announcement came during an earnings report last week, in which the company said it did $40.5 billion in sales in fiscal year 2024. That represented an increase in sales of 5% over 2023.

“As we look to build on the substantial progress we made on our Back to Basics work in fiscal 2024, we believe this review was appropriate to further strengthen the foundation of our business,” said Todd Vasos, Dollar General’s chief executive officer. “While the number of closings represents less than one percent of our overall store base, we believe this decision better positions us to serve our customers and communities.”

While some stores are closing, Dollar General said it plans on opening 575 new stores in 2025, with up to 15 new stores opening in Mexico. The company also plans to remodel 2,000 stores and relocate 45 more this year.
