New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office receives funds for bomb detection dog

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The Wilmington Central Rotary Club raised more than $20,000 at its annual Miracles of Rotary Lock Up event and it’s helping local causes.

One of the causes is a bomb detection dog for the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.

This pup will serve the county in several different places including the courthouse, at the airport, at area schools, and even large events like the Azalea Festival.

Sgt. Justin Stegall said the new K9 will train for quite some time before getting to work.

“The one we currently have will be reaching retirement age soon,” Stegall said. “So, we like to bring one in before the dog reaches retirement so the two handlers can help each other, train each other, and show each other the ropes.”

Stegall said this new furry friend will help ensure safety around New Hanover County.
