MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (WCSC) — Berkeley County will open an application period on Monday for local organizations seeking opioid settlement funding.
The county has received $601,458.78 in its latest installment from a $26 billion national opioid settlement and plans to distribute its share to local organizations and agencies working to combat the opioid epidemic.
The application period opens at 8 a.m. on April 27 and runs through noon on May 8, 2026. Eligible applicants include organizations and agencies working on the front lines of the opioid crisis and/or providing opioid addiction recovery or prevention services.
Funding must be used for one or more approved opioid remediation purposes, including:
- Naloxone or other FDA-approved overdose reversal drugs
- Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) distribution and other opioid-related treatment
- Services for pregnant and postpartum women
- Expanding treatment for neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS)
- Warm handoff programs and recovery services
- Treatment for incarcerated populations
- Prevention programs
- Expanding syringe service programs
- Evidence-based data collection and research on abatement effectiveness
The settlement stems from opioid manufacturers, distributors and pharmacies. South Carolina is set to receive more than $360 million over the next 18 years, with at least 92% directed toward addressing the opioid crisis statewide. More than $100 million is expected to go to nonprofits, hospitals, state agencies and other organizations.
Berkeley County has received annual allocations since 2022 and has received $3,594,883.37 total to date.
County officials said they are still awaiting state approval before distributing the funds. Eligible nonprofits are encouraged to apply for up to $100,000 once the application period opens.
