Demographic resilience: Investing in human capital for sustainable futures

At the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, this high-level side event will promote global dialogue on how countries can turn demographic change into a development opportunity, through sustained investment in people, strong social systems and evidence-informed policymaking.

The event is co-hosted by the Governments of Japan, Morocco and Uzbekistan, in collaboration with UNFPA.

The world is undergoing a profound demographic transformation. While the global population will continue to grow for decades, this overall trend masks significant diversity across countries. Some countries continue to experience high fertility and rapid population growth, creating pressure to expand childcare, education, employment, health services and infrastructure for large youth populations. Others face slow, stagnant or negative population growth, raising concerns about labour shortages, population ageing, pension sustainability and rising healthcare costs.

Despite these different realities, countries face a common challenge in how to turn demographic change into a development opportunity and a strategic pathway for advancing human capital, inclusive growth and social cohesion.

By bringing together diverse country perspectives, this event will serve as a global platform for discussing partnerships and policy solutions that can help countries build demographic resilience. It will also generate key messages to pave the way for a future Global Forum on Demographic Resilience and Human Capital, planned to be held in Uzbekistan.
