Back Columbus Blue is busy distributing $30,000 dollars in scholarship funds to local first responders and their children this week. Donations to the Columbus based non-profit has ballooned over the past eleven years with the help of an annual golf tournament and other fundraisers making the scholarships possible.
Recipients of the scholarships include members of the Columbus Police Department, Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office, Columbus Fire & EMS, Muscogee County Prison, the Columbus State University Police Department and their children. A total of 60 scholarships for $500 dollars each were awarded this year.
Paul Voorhees and Jed Harris initially created Back Columbus Blue as a modest way to provide encouragement and occasional meals to local law enforcement and first responders. The growing support from the community over the last decade allowed the organization to expand offering the scholarships. One hundred percent of the proceeds raised by Back Columbus Blue goes directly to support first responders.
Sheriff Greg Countryman commended the recipients from the Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office Tuesday. “Your hard work and dedication has truly paid off. We are so proud of each and every one of you. We are grateful for the support of our employees by Back Columbus Blue and we were proud to see several of our CLEA alumni present for the ceremony. Job well done to all! We know you will go on to do great things.”
