Shoppers of all economic backgrounds are flocking to dollar stores

Dollar stores are booming nationwide in this economy.

In keeping up with a trend that’s been occurring since at least last year, Grocery Dive reports that dollar chain titans Dollar Tree and Dollar General both saw strong sale growth — particularly in consumable goods like groceries and household supplies — in their most recent fiscal quarters.

According to Placer.ai’s The Anchor, Dollar Tree led in visit growth with a 4.8 percent year-over-year increase in comparison to Dollar General’s 1.9 percent. Something that’s particularly impressive, considering that Dollar Tree closed about 1,000 stores just two years ago.

And what’s most interesting, as Us Weekly points out, is that shoppers of all economic backgrounds are gravitating toward dollar stores amidst rising costs, including those from high-income households.

In fact, Dollar Tree CEO Michael Credon claims that about 60 percent of new shoppers are high-income earners, Yahoo! Finance reported in December, or those who make more than $100,000 a year. Another 30 percent are middle-income earners, or those making between $60,000 and $100,000 annually.

Many dollar chains seem determined to keep product costs low, too: The Hill notes that Dollar General, for one, began offering 2,000 items at $1 or less, a lot of which was food. Pennsylvania-based Ollie’s Bargain Outlet, true to its name, recently invested $15 million in assuring prices remain a bargain.

Dollar General claimed in 2025 that this newfound growth has led to plans of “450 new store openings in the U.S.” this year, as well as 2,000 store renovations. Dollar Tree also announced about 400 new store openings this year.

Said Dollar General CEO Todd Vasos during a recent earnings call: “This broad-based category growth is a testament to the relevance of our offering and our position as America’s neighborhood general store.”
