Dollar General closed 3 times more stores than it opened last month


In a reversal from the discount chain’s rapid expansion of recent years, Dollar General closed three times more stores than it opened in January.

Last month, Dollar General closed 27 stores and opened nine, according to Supermarket News, which tracks monthly grocery store openings and closings nationwide using data from Scrapehero.com. Two of the closures were in Metro Detroit.

In total, there were 82 grocery store closures across the U.S. in January, including 36 Walgreens locations, four Dollar Tree stores, four Save-a-Lot locations, three Walmart stores and three CVS locations, the report said.

During the same month, there were 18 grocery store openings, including two Dollar Trees, two Save-a-Lots and two Whole Foods stores, the report said.
