Dollar General has announced it is closing almost 100 locations across the US this year.
The chain of discount stores in its fourth quarter and fiscal year 2024 report stated that it conducted a portfolio optimization review of its Dollar General and pOpshelf stores to identify ones to shutter or re-banner based on their current and expected performance and operating conditions.
In the report released this month, the company revealed that it plans to shutter 96 Dollar General stores and 45 pOpshelf stores, and convert six pOpshelf locations into Dollar Generals.
‘As we look to build on the substantial progress we made on our Back to Basics work in fiscal 2024, we believe this review was appropriate to further strengthen the foundation of our business,’ stated Dollar General CEO Todd Vasos.

‘While the number of closings represents less than one percent of our overall store base, we believe this decision better positions us to serve our customers and communities.’
All closures are expected to happen in the first quarter of the fiscal year ending January 30, 2026.
The company did not immediately disclose the locations of the affected stores.
It comes after Dollar General in 2021 unveiled plans to open about 1,000 pOpshelf stores through the end of fiscal year 2025 in light of their popularity. They are focused on home decor, cleaning supplies and party items and are meant to ‘engage customers with a fun, affordable and stress-free shopping experience’.

The company based in Goodlettsville, Tennessee, runs more than 20,000 Dollar General, pOpshelf, DG Market and DGX stores in 48 states, according to its website.
It comes just a couple months after a research group reported that store closures are expected to double from 2024 to roughly 15,000 this year across America.
Earlier this year, department store chain Kohl’s announced that it would close 27 locations by April of this year.
