- Dollar Tree has quietly raised the baseline price of a growing number of key items to $1.75 throughout the year.
- The discount retailer has defended the price increases, saying that 85% of its items were still under $2.
- To deal with tariffs, Dollar Tree has had to raise its prices, negotiate with suppliers and expand its offerings in hopes of attracting new customers.
Dollar Tree might be a discount store, but it’s one that attracts budget-conscious shoppers from all walks of life who just enjoy the thrill of finding a good deal.
The days that Dollar Tree lived up to its name, selling products for just one dollar, ended after the COVID-19 pandemic, and it doesn’t look like it’s coming back any time soon.
Enthusiast discount shoppers have taken to social media after noticing that Dollar Tree appears to be raising its prices yet again, raising its $1.25 baseline price to $1.50 on a growing number of key items, and some of the items that were previously priced at $1.50 have increased to $1.75.
Dollar Tree started changing its products’ price points over the summer, according to TheKrazyCouponLady.com, a website dedicated to helping shoppers stretch the value of each and every dollar. But seems to have taken shoppers a few months to notice.
During its November earnings call, Dollar Tree CEO Michael Creedon defended the price increases.
“Expanding our assortment to include items at a variety of price points is fast becoming the standard Dollar Tree model,” he said.
“We still have 85% of our stores at $2 or less. Think about that. You walk in and you’re finding value around every corner. We think our customer is really pleased with that,” Creedon added.
Here’s how Dollar Tree’s price points have changed.
When did ‘Dollar Tree Plus’ introduce $3 and $5 price points
Dollar Tree started to test higher price points back in 2019, introducing “Dollar Tree Plus” stores that sold items at $3 and $5 price points. These stores’ success led to the company expanding the concept in September 2021.
The rollout of the new store concept was slow. The company planned to have 500 Dollar Tree Plus stores by the end of 2021, another 1,500 stores in 2022, and at least 5,000 stores expected by the end of 2024.
When did Dollar Tree raise its prices from $1 to $1.25?
Dollar Tree started to introduce higher price points back in 2019, but the discount retailer didn’t raise its base price point of one dollar until November 2021.
Citing inflation, Dollar Tree announced on Nov. 24, 2021, that it was rolling out a price increase to $1.25 for many of its items in stores.
“Lifting the one-dollar constraint represents a monumental step for our organization and we are enthusiastic about the opportunity to meaningfully improve our shoppers’ experience and unlock value for our stakeholders,” said then Dollar Tree president and CEO Michael Witynski in a statement.
When did Dollar Tree raise its prices to $1.50?
Dollar Tree announced another price increase in March 2024, increasing the price of some of its products from $1.25 to $1.50 and raising the prices of its “Plus” items to $7.
“This year, across 3,000 stores, we expect to expand our multi-price assortment by over 300 items at price points ranging from $1.50 to $7,” then Dollar Tree CEO Rick Dreiling said in the fourth quarter earnings call on March 13.
Did Dollar Tree raise its prices to $1.75?
Budget-conscious shoppers have reported that Dollar Tree has quietly raised its prices on a handful of items to $1.75 throughout 2025, according to TheKrazyCouponLady.com, which published an exhaustive look at which prices have increased.
In the latest earnings call, Creedon said that 85% of Dollar Tree’s items were still under $2, and TheKrazyCouponLady.com affirmed that the “vast majority” of its in-store products are still priced at $1.25.
Why is Dollar Tree raising its prices again?
During the summer, Dollar Tree warned its investors that tariffs and price volatility could take a massive bite out of its Q2 profits.
“Given the volatility of today’s operating environment, it is challenging to predict with precision the near-term performance of the business in Q2, especially regarding tariff and other cost mitigation efforts,” said Creedon in a call with investment analysts in June.
Dollar Tree said that it has had to negotiate with suppliers, opt for new products, drop others, buy them from other countries and raise its prices to deal with tariffs.
The company opened 106 new Dollar Tree stores and converted 646 of its stores to its new multi-price format in Q3, according to its latest earnings report.
