Euro News: Schwarz-Merhy, Glanton-Markic, Lele Sadjo-De Carolis, More


Purse bids for the fight for the vacant EBU heavyweight title between German Tom Schwarz (29-1) and Belgian Ryad Merhy (32-2), that were scheduled to be held today (January 22), have been postponed until January 30.

According to German site boxen1.com, the postponement is at the request of the Belgian camp, who after the victory against Frenchman Tony Yoka may have more lucrative fights in sight than going for the EBU title.

Former EBU and Spanish featherweight champion Jose Antonio “Gitano” Jiminez has passed away at the age of 71 due to heart failure, reports Espabox. Jiminez turned pro in 1970 and was active until 1978 with a record of 41-12-7. He won the EBU title in 1973 by beating Tommy Glencross and defended it twice before losing to Elio Cotena in 1974. After retiring he became a trainer and trained among others Spanish welterweight champ Aitor Nieto.

American cruiserweight Brandon Glanton (18-2) meets Croatian Emil Markic (35-4) on Sunday (Jan 28) in Deauville, France, on a dinner boxing event at the Casino de Deauville. At stake is the WBO International title.

In the headliner Hasan Amzile (6-2) and Mohamed Suleiman Khartoum (11-1) clash for the vacant French super lightweight title.

On the undercard, former EBU and WBA I-C super welter champ Milan Prat (21-1) is having his second fight since the devastating loss to Slawa Spomer last year and is in against Nigerian Suleiman Jafuru (15-0 according to BoxRec).

Former Swedish heavyweight champ Awadh Tamim has been on and off Universum’s show in Cologne, Germany, on Saturday (Jan 27), with three different opponents being named.

However, the latest news, as of today (Jan 22), is that he will fight and it will be against Mourad Aliev (5-0).

Kevin Lele Sadjo’s defense of the EBU super middleweight title against former WBA champ Giovanni De Carolis is, according to the EBU, on for March 9 and will take place in Levallois (France) with Y 12 promoting.

Sadjo (21-0) and De Carolis (33-10-1) were first set to fight on December 2 of last year but De Carolis withdrew days before due to an injury.
