England U21 are just one win away from becoming the first side since Spain in 2013 to win back to back editions of the U21 Euros, after Harvey Elliott’s brace guided the Young Lions into Saturday night’s final with a 2-1 win over the Netherlands.
Lee Carsley’s side only won one of their three group games, beating the Czech Republic 3-1 in their opener before being held to a goalless draw by Slovenia and losing out to Germany in their final group game.
At the quarter final stage, England beat Spain 3-1 in a repeat of the final in Georgia two years ago, setting themselves up their victory over the Dutch on Wednesday evening.
The Young Lions are looking to go into standalone third place in the all-time list of U21 European champions, having won two of the first four editions of the competition back in the early 1980s without winning one again until they were crowned champions in 2023.
Germany have been the standout team in this year’s competition having won all five of their matches so far, including victory over their fellow finalists in the group stage.
Antonio di Salvio’s side have won all seven of their matches they’ve played since the turn of the year in all competitions, and are unbeaten in their last 20 matches in total since their exit from the last edition of this tournament with a 2-0 defeat to England.
In this summer’s competition, a 3-0 opening day victory over Slovenia was followed by a 4-2 win over the Czech Republic before beating the defending champions 2-1 in their final group outing.
Germany were the only group winners to win their quarter-final tie but did need the help of extra time to book their place in the last four after conceding a 96th minute equaliser against Italy before netting the winner in the 117th minute.
Winners of three of the last eight editions of this competition, Germany made light work of their semi final clash against France, going 2-0 up inside the opening quarter of an hour before ending with a 3-0 victory.
England and Carsley have won two of their last three meetings against Germany and di Salvio at U21 level, though of course the most recent meeting between the two sides earlier in this competition ended in victory for the Germans.
