Over 20 years after J.K. Rowling first sold the Harry Potter rights to Warner Bros, the author of a fanfiction novel inspired by the incredibly popular series just landed a multi-million dollar movie deal…and sources are saying it might be one of the priciest purchases of its kind in Hollywood history.
Author SenLinYu sold the rights for their forthcoming dark fantasy novel Alchemised to Legendary Entertainment for a sum rumored to be over $3 million, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
“I’m honored by Legendary’s incredible enthusiasm for the project and can’t wait to see the world of Paladia come to life,” SenLinYu, who identifies as they/them, said in a statement.

SenLinYu (otherwise known as just “Sen”) is considered a “titan” of the fanfic world, per Collider. This isn’t the first time they’ve ventured into Harry Potter territory; their 2023 story Manacled (which combined Harry Potter with A Handmaid’s Tale) received over 10 million views on the fanfic platform AO3 and more than 100,000 five-star ratings on Goodreads, with fans declaring it “brilliant” and “better than most published novels.” Sen is particularly popular with the passionate “Dramione” fandom, which focuses on the seemingly unlikely pairing of Hermione Granger and Draco Malfoy. They also won awards for their Star Wars fan fiction matching up Kylo Ren and Rey.
Fans on social media were thrilled to hear about the upcoming movie adaptation, with one Instagram user calling Alchemised their “fav book” and another declaring, “so excited to pour my whole support into this.”
What is ‘Alchemised’ About?
Alchemised reportedly began as Dramione before evolving into a dark fantasy which takes place in a world of “necromancers and corrupt guild families.” At the center of the story is an alchemist and healer named Helen Marino who needs the help of a necromancer to retrieve her forgotten memories.
“Helena’s fight — to protect her lost history and to preserve the last remaining shreds of her former self — is just beginning,” the book jacket teased. “For her prison and captor have secrets of their own … secrets Helena must unearth, whatever the cost.”
Alchemised is scheduled to hit stores on Sept. 23.
