New multi-million dollar community center in Harrison, Ark., provides several accessible resources

HARRISON, Ark. (KY3) – Creekside Community Center officially opened on Saturday morning. It provides the community with multiple affordable and accessible resources and amenities.

Harrison Mayor Jerry Jackson said the center is going to help the community grow.

“This is going to help us attract business, possibly more industry. It’s going to help the hospital recruit doctors and specialists. It’s going to help the college,“ Mayor Jackson said. ”This is not just a small town community center; this is a big, big deal that took us six years to put together.”

He said a lot went into paying for the new building.

“It is funded through a bond issue, $20 million. We are paying 1.7 percent interest. We knew we were low. We didn’t know we were at the bottom, but we were. So we got that locked in. We’ve also paid off an extra year already, so we’re going to get this paid off,” he said. “The revenue it’s going to bring our community…it is going to bring downtown alive again!”

Harrison Parks and Rec Executive Director Chuck Eddington said there’s a massive indoor aquatics center, kiddie pool, and diving board. Plus, the center is ADA-accessible.

“We had a youth center – it just had two basketball courts now we’re going to be able with Creekside we’ll have seven basketball courts, eight volleyball courts, and eight pickleball courts,” Eddington said.

Low-income families who are on free and reduced lunch are also able to use the facilities for free, excluding the aquatic center.

Creekside is open 6 a.m.-9 p.m., seven days a week. Harrison Chief Financial Officer Luke Feighert said it’s available whenever you need to use its resources.

“We’ve been thinking about this for a long, long time. We put a lot of heart, blood, sweat, and tears into this. We wanted to do be able to make sure it was something that you would enjoy, something that you’d want to come back to every day and we think we’ve done that. But hopefully we can get you here,” Feighert said.

Creekside Community Center is located on 515 S. Spring in Harrison. You can sign up for a membership at the front desk or on the city’s website.
