Spurs Wembanyama’s participation with Team France at EuroBasket 2025

With Wemby dealing with blood clots, will he skip playing with Team France this summer?

SAN ANTONIO — Before being shelved for the remainder of the 2024-25 NBA season, San Antonio Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama made it clear he would suit up for Team France at EuroBasket 2025 this summer.

Even the French Federation president, Jean-Pierre Hunckler, confirmed Wemby’s summer participation.

“I spoke with Victor for five minutes this week, as he’s very busy, and he assured me that, barring any physical issues, he will be there for Euro 2025,” Hunckler said.

However, his summer playing plans might change with the Spurs center dealing with deep vein thrombosis.

Former Spur and current Team France general manager Boris Diaw commented on Wemby’s uncertain playing status.

“I don’t know anything yet—we haven’t talked—but the doctors will make the right decision,” he said to Basketball Sphere.

Considering Wemby’s condition was discovered relatively recently, it might be too early to definitively count him out of playing this summer.

He’ll undergo a battery of recovery programs, and the Spurs and the French big man might want to wait to play organized basketball until next season.

On the other hand, if he feels he is good to play and the medical staff clears him, getting in real-time basketball reps ahead of the season might do well for his conditioning and allow him to shake off any rust from being away from playing.

The Spurs expect him to fully recover in time for the 2025-26 season and believe this is a one-time medical incident.
