Watch as bear wanders into NJ Dollar General, later euthanized after biting woman

A bear was euthanized by police in Sussex County Sept. 16 after it entered a store and bit a woman, state officials said.

The bear entered a Dollar General store in Vernon Township at approximately 3:45 p.m. Sept. 16 and bit a woman’s leg, according to NJDEP Fish and Wildlife. The woman was brought to a local hospital for treatment.

A store customer led the bear out of the store before it was euthanized, according to an NJDEP spokesperson.

Footage of the bear wandering through the store has since started circulating on social media.

Prior to the sighting at Dollar General, police reported that the same 175-pound sow was seen on the side of Route 94, “behaving erratically and moving in and out of traffic.” According to the NJDEP spokesperson, Vernon police fired rubber bullets at the bear, causing it to flee into the woods.

Fish and Wildlife personnel collected the bear’s remains for rabies testing, which will take about three to five days.
