CHIPPEWA FALLS (WQOW) – High schoolers got a taste of adult life and the challenges that come with it.
At the Chippewa Falls YMCA, Royal Credit Union held its test drive simulation for Chippewa Falls High School. There, students chose a career and went through 22 stations that deal with what expenses you have as an adult.
These tasks included budgeting their vehicle, housing, utilities, clothing, personal care, and more. A couple of eleventh grade students from Chippewa Falls High School told News 18 some of the costs that really surprised them.
“Food,” said Emma Schuelke. “If you want good quality food it’s like $2,000 a month, and that was shocking to me.”
“Toiletry and bathroom equipment stuff,” said Colton Petska. “That took a bigger chunk out of my budget than I thought. I thought it was only going to be $50, but I had to put down almost $200 because of having a wife and a kid, too.”
Both of the students said they also learned about interest rates. In the future, they want to try and pay things off as soon as they can so they don’t accumulate interest.
On April 18, Eau Claire high schoolers will go through the simulation as well.
