BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – According to officials with the US Attorney’s office and the FBI, 64-year-old Robert Winston Burgett has agreed to plead guilty to crimes related to the embezzlement of nearly $950,000 from the City of Homewood.
In documents filed Friday in federal district court, Burgett was charged with three counts of wire fraud. At the same time, a plea agreement indicating Burgett would plead guilty to the charges was filed.
According to the indictment and plea agreement, when Burgett worked for the City of Homewood between at least May 2023 and March 2024, authorities say he used the position to embezzle almost $950,000 from city bank accounts for personal purposes.
Documents say Burgett altered city bank account statements and made false entries into city accounting records.
Homewood Mayor Patrick McClusky gave the following statement about this incident:
“The City of Homewood was made aware this afternoon that the FBI’s investigation into former finance director, Robert Burgett, has resulted in Mr. Burgett pleading guilty to all of the charges against him. The City appreciates the work of the FBI, the US Attorney’s office, the Jefferson County District Attorney’s office, and the Homewood Police Department in investigating this incident swiftly and thoroughly since it was reported to them by the City of Homewood. The City will continue to work with each of those entities through any further investigation.”
A date will be set by the court for Burgett to enter the guilty plea.
