BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Former Homewood finance director Robert Burgett officially pled guilty in federal court Wednesday, Oct. 23, to three counts of wire fraud.
The plea deal was first announced in August 2024.
According to officials with the US Attorney’s office and the FBI, 64-year-old Robert Winston Burgett agreed to plead guilty to crimes related to the embezzlement of nearly $950,000 from the City of Homewood.
According to federal district court documents, Burgett was charged with three counts of wire fraud.
According to the indictment and plea agreement, when Burgett worked for the City of Homewood between at least May 2023 and March 2024, authorities say he used the position to embezzle almost $950,000 from city bank accounts for personal purposes.
Documents say Burgett altered city bank account statements and made false entries into city accounting records.
