KINGSTON, N.Y. (NEWS10) — The former Ulster County Commissioner of Finance Burton Gulnick, Jr., has been sentenced to two years in jail for two counts of grand larceny, according to the Ulster County District Attorney’s Office (UCDA). Gulnick pled guilty to the charges on October 10, 2023.
Gulnick was arrested back in June of 2023 and charged with stealing over $97,000 from Hurley Recreational Association, a non-profit organization that provides summer programs for children. Investigators determined that he also stole thousands of dollars from an election campaign bank account of former Ulster County Executive Michael Hein.
Police say Gulnick was formerly the treasurer for both organizations. According to the UCDA, Gulnick stole from both victims over an extended period of time for personal use, manipulating accounting records to hide his crimes.
Gulnick was forced to pay restitution of $35,000 to the Hurley Recreational Association and $15,000 to the Hein Campaign prior to his sentencing. He was also required to waive his appellate rights and sign judgement confessions for two insurance companies that paid the Hurley Recreational Association approximately $62,000 after the thefts were discovered.
