More than 80% of schools in Haiti are non-state, not funded or regulated by the Haitian government. Non-state education is promoted by the Haitian government to improve the country’s overall education sector, but these non-state schools vary widely in cost and quality of education. Haitian school owners face significant financial constraints that have been exacerbated by COVID-19 school closures. Furthermore, financial institutions in Haiti offer few tailored products to non-state schools or the families of aspiring students. This gap in financial services prevents many non-state schools from improving infrastructure or investing in additional teaching resources, which in turn hampers students’ access to quality learning.
