The Rusk County Board Finance Committee met on June 20, 2024. In addition to the usual approval of expenditures, equipment purchases, and the like, there was a lengthy discussion of whether to authorize the construction of a new jail. Over the past few years, the county has been working the Samuels Group Architectural firm to design the new jail facilities, and with Baird, a wealth management firm that is helping plan the financing/bonding of the project.
The meeting started with public comments. The first to speak was Matt Gulseth, an employee of the Flambeau River Outfitters, which is located in a building that would be razed if this current plan is approved. Gulseth stated that nobody from the county has come to talk to them about what their options are. He asked, “Why do we need to spend 60 million on a jail?”
