Q1 2024 will be choppy, but ‘a good sign’ for risk assets


In the context of an extensive year-end rally, stocks (^DJI, ^IXIC, ^GSPC) are off to a slow start in 2024. But, as Fundstrat Global Advisor Managing Director Mark Newton puts it, “it’s normal to get this sort of New Year’s hangover.”

Newton sits down with Yahoo Finance anchors Seana Smith and Brad Smith to share observations on S&P 500 seasonality trends tied to US presidential election years and his top stock picks for traversing market volatility.

“Normally, the first quarter [of an election year] is not all that robust,” the Fundstrat Global Head of Technical Strategy states. “Typically we tend to see some underperformance. So it’s not surprising to me, specifically given how rapidly sentiment has gotten more optimistic.”
