TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – Shawnee County’s Audit Finance Department has shared its budget progress during the first half of 2024.
During the Shawnee County Commission Work Session on Monday, Aug. 5, Commissioners asked whether there are alternatives the County can explore to bring in more county revenue other than through property taxes, such as grants.
Shawnee County’s financial administrator Jennifer Sauer said “Our other options are more programs in our departments, more federal money that we are trying to find, [and] other sources of revenues. On the revenue side that is really about all the room that we have.”
The department is currently in the process of switching to new software, with that new software, the department also purchased a new tool that will offer new qualifying grant opportunities for the county.
“It’s again doing a lot of the heavy lifting for them,” said Sauer. “They can kind of create some search tools and they can just get notified anytime something new appears in that category,” said Jennifer Sauer. “So, they do not have to spend a lot of time going out and manually looking every single week.”
The new software tool will also provide a one-page summary describing the grant instead of a 50 to 100-page document when considering a grant to apply for.
