MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – The Vermont legislative session isn’t even half over but lawmakers are already saying that they will likely extend it into the summer to deal with tackling education finance reform.
Governor Phil Scott last month introduced a sweeping education plan that includes eliminating supervisory unions and establishing five regional school districts.
Vermont’s rising education costs and talk of reform have been kicking around Montpelier for years, but a double-digit spike in property taxes last year, a statewide rejection of school budgets, and November’s GOP gains at the Statehouse have accelerated those affordability discussions.
Senate Republicans met with Democratic leadership and agreed they would have to extend the session into the late spring or summer to arrive at a bipartisan plan.
