KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Around 1,200 young scholars in the Kansas City metro were gifted nearly $48 million in scholarships thanks to a local organization.
On Saturday afternoon, June 22, scholars from across the metro funneled into the Kansas City Convention Center Grand Ballroom, at 301 W. 13th St., in Kansas City, Mo., where KC Scholars said it dished out nearly $48 million in scholarships at its Make Your Mark event.
The organization said it celebrated a milestone at the 2024 event with 1,210 students who received the largest amount of scholarship donations in its history.
Whereas in the past, scholars would have been awarded at their individual schools, this year’s event looked a little different as families were celebrated to promote academic excellence.
“It represents hope,” said Earl Martin-Phalen, CEO and President of KC Scholars. “Some of us went through school and we immediately wanted to get a job and that we should do that. Some go through high school and want to go to college and get an advanced degree and there should be an opportunity but for many here in Kansas City, finance, money, is a barrier to achieving their dream of college.”
The organization noted that each student received a $50,000 scholarship.
