Here’s a recap of Greenville County Council’s April 16 meeting.
Approved: Opioid settlement funding allocations
Council unanimously approved allocating $3.3 million from the county’s share of opioid settlement funding for treatment programs and personnel for three frontline agencies and organizations dealing with opioid addiction.
The Greenville County Detention Center will receive $1.04 million, county EMS will receive $50,000, and the Phoenix Center, with its partner programs FAVOR and Challenges, will receive $2.2 million.
County council was briefed during a Committee of the Whole meeting on how the groups would spend the funding to improve or expand their addiction treatment efforts.
The money comes from the South Carolina Opioid Recovery Fund (SCORF) where the state’s share of opioid lawsuits settlement money is held. Greenville County has about $7.2 million in the SCORF Guaranteed Political Subdivision Subfund as of March 20.
Money from SCORF must be used for treatment and prevention programs for opioid addiction and cannot be used in place of existing local, state or federal funding for such programs.
Greenville County expects to receive about $28 million over the 18 years of the settlement payout program.
Denied: rezoning request for Worley Road property
Council unanimously denied at second reading a request to rezone a property at 207 Worley Rd. near Cherrydale from R-12, single-family residential, to S-1, services district.
The property owner requested rezoning for the 0.6-acre parcel to allow for property and trailer storage for a construction company.
The county planning commission and the council’s planning and development committee recommended denying the request as inconsistent with the predominantly residential nature of the surrounding properties.
