$32 million in FEMA funds earmarked for St. Louis High, but which campus?

LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) – Confusion surrounds the $32 million in FEMA funding announced for St. Louis Catholic High School this week.

It is unclear whether the money is intended for repairs to the hurricane-devastated buildings and campus on Bank Street or a new school off Corbina Road in southeast Lake Charles.

A news release from U.S. Rep. Clay Higgins (R-La.) says the $32 million will fund repairs to the old gym, main building and campus in the Garden District of Lake Charles.

The Diocese of Lake Charles’ website says the money is for a new school in the Morganfield area, where the diocese has purchased a 47-acre site.

KPLC is trying to get clarification. We are waiting on responses from the diocese, the school, Higgins’ office and the state Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, which FEMA funds are funneled through..

Meanwhile, some viewers have recently complained about the state of the old St. Louis buildings on Bank Street.

Officials with the City of Lake Charles responded with the following statement:

“The City has received complaints regarding the condition of the St. Louis campus as well as other properties of the diocese. The City has several property standards cases open for these properties that pre-date those complaints. The City is scheduled to visit with the Diocese in the coming weeks to discuss the status of all properties that remain in a state of disrepair, including the St. Louis Campus.”
