MONTCLAIR, NJ — The Montclair Town Council tackled several items during their recent meeting, including community development block grants.
Planning Director Janice Talley presented a report to the council about applications for the 2024 community development block grants (CDBG) program, which provides towns and counties with funding to revitalize local neighborhoods.
The program is funded through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and administered by the Essex County Division of Housing and Community Development.
The township received nine applications from local agencies this year, Talley noted at the Dec. 5 meeting: Family Promise of Essex County, Succeed2Gether, Montclair Neighborhood Development Corporation, Oaks Integrated Care (formerly COPE Center), Start Out Fresh Intervention Advocates, Strategic Mentoring (Brother 2 Brother), Montclair History Center, Neighborhood Council, and Sister to Sister.
Talley also presented a list of township projects that are being presented for potential CDBG funds in 2024, including improvements to Cornerstone House.
Town council members were asked to evaluate the proposed projects, so that a resolution can be prepared that prioritizes the applications. Representatives from each organization spoke about their funding needs (watch the video below, cued to the CDBG discussion).
