Abington Police Foundation diverts funds to support fire companies in the wake of SPS fire

ABINGTON — The Abington Police Foundation has announced that the funds raised at the Comedy of Joe Conklin and the City Rhythm Orchestra event on April 5th at the Keswick Theatre will be redirected to assist the five volunteer Abington Township Fire Companies.

The Abington Township Fire Department consists of: Abington, McKinley, Weldon, Edge Hill, and Roslyn companies. This donation will help replace critical equipment, including Personal Protective Equipment that was damaged or destroyed in response to the devastating SPS building fire that recently occurred in the township.

The decision to divert the funds was made after consultation with local emergency response teams, recognizing the pressing need for additional protective equipment for local fire service personnel. The Abington Township Fire Department worked tirelessly to respond to the SPS fire, and these funds will help ensure that volunteer firefighters have the necessary tools to stay safe in future emergencies.

“We are incredibly proud of our community’s resilience and the support we’ve received from the public during such a challenging time,” said Abington Police Chief Patrick Molloy. “While the Comedy of Joe Conklin and City Rhythm Orchestra event was originally intended to raise funds for the police foundation, we believe redirecting these proceeds to help our fire department with crucial PPE and other equipment is the right course of action to support the safety and well-being of all our volunteer firefighters.”

“The SPS fire was a catastrophic event, with extensive damage affecting the resources of the all-volunteer Abington Township Fire Department. With the continued dedication and commitment of our emergency responders, this redirection of funds will go a long way to support being properly equipped to handle the demands of future crises,” stated the foundation in a press release.

“The Abington Police Foundation extends its deepest gratitude to all event attendees, donors, and volunteers

The Abington Police Foundation’s mission is centered on ensuring the Abington Police Department has the necessary resources, training, and support to effectively serve and protect the community. Through a combination of fundraising efforts, community partnerships, and donations, the Foundation seeks to bridge the gap between government funding and the needs of the department.
