TOMAHAWK, Wis. (WJFW) – Earlier in the summer, portions of Texas were devastated by flash flooding. The destruction caused loss of life and many to have to rebuild their lives in the aftermath.
The Tomahawk American Legion Auxiliary Post 93 is working to help those affected by the floods with a fundraiser. Part of the catalyst for the fundraiser is the auxiliary post’s reaction to seeing the devastation that took place at a summer camp.
Tomahawk American Legion Auxiliary Post 93 president Carol Mueller said, “all those girls that died, the children yeah, it just stuck, we’re moms, we’re all moms and it just struck a chord, we got to help them, we just got to help.”
The auxiliary post had a meeting where First Vice Roseann Baldowsky spoke to the group about helping out those affected by the floods.
Janet Ericksen said Baldowsky is “very much involved and when she spoke to us at our meeting, we all decided that this was such a good cause and we just felt the need to help people.”
Auxiliary Post 93 has been in contact with George McHorse who is the adjutant for American Legion Post 208 in Kerrville, Texas. Post 208 in Texas has been working to help those affected by the flood and first responders looking for those still missing. Auxiliary Post 93 has set aside some funds for the fundraiser and has raised some money but more is needed.
Baldowsky said, “George is, he is happy to take whatever we can give them. I mean like I said he is getting help form FEMA and from all those others but there are so many small things that you forget you even have, they’ve lost everything.”
Money raised in the fundraiser will be sent down to the Post 208 in Texas where it will go directly to those in need of assistance after the flood. Some of the small things that the money will be used for include hand sanitizer and diapers. The Auxiliary Post 93 has a hope that the fundraiser will achieve.
“Help, for these people,” Baldowsky stated, “it’s hard to talk about.”
Donations will be collected until August 31. Donations can be made through the teller line at Crossbridge Community Bank in Tomahawk or be mailed or dropped off at the American Legion in Tomahawk where a collection box is located.
