Who needs Paris when you have Papa’s?
For the third year now, The ‘Bar Olympics’ was held in Keokuk Saturday. The teams, were groups consisting of four to five individuals, traveled from place to place, encountering challenges at each location. The group started the day at Papa’s, on old Highway 61 north of town. There were 14 establishments participating this time.
This year, the event was to benefit KASPIR, which is an acronym for Keokuk Animal Services — Partners In Rescue.
The Bar Olympics consists of various games, which are different at each place, and participants do not know what awaits them before they arrive.
At the South Side Boat Club, the final stop for the day, it was a hop-scotch with a sort of grown-up Big Wheels, but with a difference! The back wheels can pivot, and the pavement being slightly downhill from level threw many for a literal loop.
Shannan Huffman the organizer, showed the group how it’s done.
That was not all there was to the event, with an auction of donated items, and prizes for contestants of varying types for a wide variety of accomplishments.
It’s what Shannan called a win-win for the people as well as the animals. And the contestants all have a good time.
The weather even played along, providing plenty of sunshine and warmth.
Each member paid a $20 entry fee, ($80 per team of four) and there were T-shirts and hoodies and other items for sale. There was also a raffle during the event. Anyone purchasing an item at every stop even got an extra surprise.
The group is a 501© 3 charitable organization, and anyone may make a tax exempt donation at Animal Services

Huffman said she wanted to thank everyone for coming out and the establishments who participated this year as well as the sponsors and those who donated goods. Without their generous help, the Bar Olympics would not have been the success it has been.
