Beaufort Co. School District secures funds to give free meals to its students

BEAUFORT COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) – Thanks to federal funds, all students in the Beaufort County School District will have access to two free meals a day for the upcoming school year.

The district announced Thursday that all of its schools will be offering one breakfast and one lunch at no cost to any of their students.

“Last year, we were glad to be able to offer this at 20+ schools, but now we are ecstatic to expand this to all of our schools,” Superintendent Frank Rodriguez said.

Students will have access to these two meals each school day because of funding through the Community Eligibility Provision by the United States Department of Agriculture.

“This federal program gives us the opportunity to feed every student at no cost to the District,” District Chief Financial Officer Tonya Crosby said. “This is a win-win for our students and the district.”

Students are automatically included in the program but may be opted out should a parent or guardian wish to remove their child.

Removal from the program can be initiated by contacting Virginia Weekly, the district’s food services accountant, at 843-322-0806 or by emailing [email protected].

Those who choose to make a formal appeal may reach out to Crosby by emailing [email protected]  or sending a letter to P.O. Box 755, Beaufort, SC 29901.
