BROOKLYN, Ohio — The trickledown effect of the $7.4 billion opioid crisis settlement with Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family finds funds going to Northeast Ohio communities.
Considering Ohio is receiving roughly $198 million to help address the opioid crisis, Brooklyn with its nearly $30,000 award recently created an opioid settlement advisory task force.
“We’re establishing basically a panel or a group that kind of determines what we’re gonna do with those funds,” Brooklyn Mayor Ron Van Kirk said.
As for the task force, the membership will include a City Council representative, as well as a Brooklyn resident and addiction professional.
The group will provide suggestions that could be included in the 2026 operating or capital budgets.
“We have a couple of ideas of what we want to do with the funds, but we want to make sure that we get all of our Ts crossed before we delve into that,” he said.
“Obviously, it’ll be police and safety related that will be looking to do for next year, but the task force will determine that. I’m sure we’ll have conversations. That task force is really the first step in getting those funds and being able to spend those funds for the purposes that we want to expand them for.”
The financial award is tied through state of Ohio and certain local governments engaged in litigation seeking to hold the pharmaceutical supply chain participants accountable for the damage caused by their misfeasance, nonfeasance and malfeasance.
The settlement is related to the Sackler family and Purdue Pharma starting the opioid addiction crisis in the U.S.
Awarded entities will receive funds over a 15-year period to support addiction treatment, prevention and recovery services.
