“Handing over the checks is what this event is about,” according to Steve Jorgensen, an organizer for the Car Show for a Cause, after donating all proceeds his team received from the annual car show this year.
The fourth annual Norfolk car show took place on June 1, and more than 300 cars showed up to pay respect to the two causes: Megan Mueller and Peter Lux.
Mueller had an aneurysm earlier this year, and Lux died from pancreatic cancer at 29 years old. The event raised $5,000 to split between both families.
On Tuesday, organizers from the car show met up with Lux’s and Mueller’s families to hand off the checks. Mueller’s sister, Amber, was there to accept the check, and Lux’s widow, Natasha, also was given a check.
“We’re giving people a helping hand,” Jorgensen said. “We’re letting them know we’re thinking about them, and it’s fulfilling helping people with this car show.”
Jorgensen said Car Show for a Cause is a special event because his team puts it on every year for the right reasons.
“The causes are what makes the Norfolk car show so special,” Jorgensen said. “We’re giving back to the community, that is what makes this one so special. I love a good car show, any car show, but when it’s a car show for a good cause, that’s a good thing.”
Selecting the right cause is not always easy for Jorgensen and his team; however, he believes that both the causes this year were highly significant.
“It’s hard to keep it together when you’re handing them the check, but they’re so appreciative,” Jorgensen said. “The whole community fills our hearts and makes it worth it to put on this car show. Both Mueller and Lux are very meaningful causes, and we’re hoping to continue this every year, make it better and continue to support different things in the community.”
The Norfolk area and surrounding communities have been overwhelmingly supportive and welcoming to Jorgensen and his crew.
“Not all of us live in Norfolk, it’s also the surrounding communities that help,” Jorgensen said. “But it’s hard to beat the support we’re getting from the Norfolk community. People are really generous and want this to be a good downtown event each year.”
Jorgensen wants to give special thanks to the downtown businesses that help Jorgensen’s team put on this show.
“I want to give a shoutout to the downtown businesses that allow us to have it down here and for them welcoming us to the downtown River Point District,” Jorgensen said. “It’s just wonderful, and it’s great to see all the downtown Norfolk businesses. The whole main street has come a long way.”
Jorgensen said that next year the car show will be even bigger and his team has already met to help make that happen.
“There will be more trophies, and it will just overall be bigger next year,” Jorgensen said. “We met last Saturday and we got some big plans and more cash prizes available.”
