CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – A Charlottesville food equity organization is in a tough spot, but one downtown restaurant is helping out.
Cultivate Charlottesville is seeing a shortage of funds and faces a potential shutdown. Now, Citizen Burger is reaching out to support a friend.
“They reached out to us with the idea, and of course, we said that would be great,” Executive Director of Cultivate Charlottesville Aleen Carey said. “It means the world to us and we’re very excited about it.”
The non-profit is still looking for help after not receiving its grant in the fall. After announcing their struggle, they were able to get some of the help they needed.
“We are steadily pumping through,” Carey said. “We were able to bring in more than 20% of what we need to continue with our winter appeal.”
The scary reality is that there is still a long way to go for the non-profit that manages community gardens, coordinated volunteers and distributes produce to those in need. Citizen Burger wanted to take it a step further.
“You all know what that feels like when you’re down a little bit, you’re down and out a little bit and you need help and someone comes in and says we want to be able to work with you and support you even more than we have been,” Carey said.
It’s called ‘The People’s Burger.’ All your favorite veggies on a grass-fed patty. Every burger bought gets a matching donation to Cultivate Charlottesville to help keep the organization running.
“We find Cultivate Charlottesville very important because they share a lot of our same values of providing local food sources,” General Manager of Citizen Burger August Albert said.
Fresh and local – that’s what Albert says you can expect from both of the parties.
“It’s important to help out those nonprofits cause it benefits all of us,” Albert said.
