City of Laredo receives $271K in funds for electrical infrastructure upgrades

LAREDO, Tx. (KGNS) – Downtown Laredo will shine brightly but in a different kind of way.

On Friday morning, a total of $271,290 of federal funds were given to the City of Laredo.

The money is to replace the downtown area streetlights to energy efficient LED’s and purchase solar powered trash compactors which are trash cans that crush and compact waste.

This would reduce the number of trips the garbage trucks take from downtown to the city dump.

John Porter the Environmental and Solid Waste Services Department Director said this less trips for trash pick up will mean less fuel usage and a cleaner downtown.

“Better lighting means it’s a safer downtown, the whole idea, the whole point is to get people to enjoy downtown,” said Porter. “We can bring more people downtown. In the environmental side, we use less energy, burning less fuel. The environment benefits from that.”

With the funding, 67 streetlights will be replaced and 18 solar- powered trash compactors will be purchased.
