HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — A group of New England states are asking the federal government for funds to help with green projects, including one that would benefit southeastern Connecticut.

Power Up New England would create new, and upgrade existing, transmission points of interconnection to add an additional 5,800 megawatts of offshore wind, and create a battery storage system, according to an announcement on Wednesday.

Developers for the project include Eversource and Elevate Renewables.

The project could receive up to $1 billion in funding through the Grid Resilience and Innovation Partnerships Program.

A second project, Clean Resilience Link, would be a transmission upgrade across the New England area.

“Connecticut is excited to submit these two innovative projects, together with our sister New England states, to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Grid Innovation Program,” Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Commissioner Katie Dykes said in a written announcement. “If funded, these projects will provide critical support to our state, regional, and national efforts to affordably and equitably transition to a cleaner and more reliable grid.”
