LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – Duncan Aviation may specialize in plane work, but the main attractions on the tarmac this week were cars.
Over 100 of them entered in the company’s seventh annual car show. Through the registration fees, t-shirt sales, raffles and more, thousands of dollars are raised each year.
All of it is then donated to the Make-A-Wish foundation.
“It’s a great cause for some great kids,” Mark Cote of Duncan Aviation said. “Kids that maybe aren’t as fortunate as the rest of us. We want to make sure we do whatever we can to support them.”
The cars all competed for a table full of awards, decided by car enthusiasts from a local garage. But the most meaningful is hand picked by a Make-A-Wish nominated kid each year. This year, it was 11-year-old Sawyer Roberts.
After an hour of going car to car on a golf cart, he settled on his favorite vehicle: a blue and white 1968 Rally Sport Camaro.
After Sawyer gifted his award, it was time for him to be the recipient.
“He’ll find out today that he’s going to be going to Jurassic World in Florida.” Cote said.
Make-A-Wish granted him his wish: a family-trip to Universal Studios, where Sawyer, a dinosaur enthusiast, wants to go to Jurassic World at the park.
“I expect a lot of laughter and smiling,” Ben Roberts, Sawyer’s dad, said. “So I’m looking forward to that.”
The day alone was a gift to the entire Roberts family. Sawyer is in need of a kidney donation. His family says doctors appointments have become normal, and health concerns frequent.
On this day, none of that was on their minds.
The medical struggles and everything else we’re going through,” Ben Roberts said. “It’s been awesome just to be able to not think about things for a little bit, and enjoy time as a family.”
Ben added that a matching kidney has been located: his own. He says he is currently undergoing the process to attempt to become the donor his son needs.
“We’ll share more than just being a father and son,” he said. “We’ll actually swap some parts.”
